What Is Occasional Furniture?

When first thinking of occasional furniture your mind might immediately be taken back to family gatherings, with relatives hastily rushing around trying to pull together enough tables and seating options for everyone. The assortment of furniture styles and finishes available means that well-chosen occasional pieces add those final finishing touches to a home, filling awkward bare spaces, providing all-important extra storage and pulling together both the look and feel of a space, all while remaining adaptable to serve a variety of purposes as different occasions come and go.

Typically referring to nightstands, small chests, and lamp, coffee, and console tables, easily moveable chairs and other seating options also fall under the umbrella term of occasional furniture.

Occasional Tables

When hosting a party or even just having a few friends over for coffee, surface space suddenly becomes hugely important. Nesting tables are brilliantly versatile pieces of occasional furniture and can be used to serve pre-dinner nibbles, hold house lamps for beautiful ambient lighting, or simply be a convenient place for your guests to set down their drink.

Hall and console tables are ideal for adding extra personality into a room. As well as providing the ideal place to display a variety of different objects, which can be changed depending on your mood or the season, you might also choose to borrow it for a different use every now and again. Console tables can be ideal serving tables, displaying a delicious cheese board during a classy dinner event, or buffet food for a children’s birthday party.

Occasional Seating Options

Whilst it is likely that you have a favourite chair or place on the sofa where you like to spend time when you’re relaxing at home, incorporating other seating options will both enhance the comfort factor of your home and provide useful extra space for when you have guests visiting.

A classic armchair can complete a living room or spare bedroom, especially when accessorised with throw cushions and a luxurious blanket, but they can also be moved wherever they’re needed. The same also applies to ottomans, futons and even bean bags and poufs, providing comfortable places for guests to sit and watch a film, or for you to catch up with loved ones you haven’t seen in a while.

Additional Versatile Storage

Trolleys are exceptionally versatile pieces. You may decide to use one to provide useful additional storage throughout the year or to display your favourite objects, before transforming it into a classy bar cart for an evening soiree or placing it in a guest bathroom with hand towels, floss and other personal care items for your guests to use.

Occasional furniture should never overwhelm your home, but should instead seamlessly enhance your space even when it isn't currently being used. You may, for example, have a beautiful magazine stand which completes your living room year-round, but which might be useful if a close friend has just got engaged and you’re hosting a little celebration. Arranging a selection of bridal and wedding magazines on your magazine stand next to a coffee table housing a selection of tea and cakes will undoubtedly look and feel very special.

Although these events won’t occur every day, having versatile pieces incorporated within your home might be extraordinarily useful or special when you least expect it.
