Your Complete Bed Size Guide
Getting a good night’s sleep is important to everyone. But there can be a bewildering range of choice when it comes to beds and mattress sizes. To relax properly in comfort and sleep soundly, you need to think about what will suit you when deciding on a bed.
As we spend many hours asleep, it is important to buy the type of bed that best fits your body type, lifestyle and room. Here we explain what to choose to ensure sweet dreams.
Good sleep hygiene depends on your bed having the right dimensions. The optimum combination of features will provide the right kind of support to keep your spine and joints healthy, and will ensure enough space for you and your partner.
Mattresses are a standard size, however bed frames may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, which is why it is a good idea to get the tape measure out. Some companies - such as IKEA - have their own bed and mattress sizes, which means you have to buy both bed frame and mattress from the same outlet.
As a rule, mattress dimensions should be at least 10cm longer than the biggest person. Tuck your hands under your head: if your elbow touches your neighbour or the edge of the mattress, you could need a bigger mattress.
Here is our guide to the standard bed sizes you will encounter:
Toddler bed: 77cm x 142cm (2’6” x 4’8”)
Designed for children aged one to three, this mattress is a starting point for children moving up from a cot. It needs careful fitting: gaps down the side should not exceed 4cm, and mattress thickness should be 8-10cm.
Small single: 77cm x 192cm (2’6” x 6’4”)
This compact size is suitable for young children or if you are petite, and also makes a space saving guest bed. Its small dimensions mean that it can be easily moved.
Single: 92cm x 192cm (3’0” x 6’4”)
For children growing into their teens, this model is a good long-term investment. It provides comfort and space for individual sleepers, and will fit nicely into your guest bedroom
Small double: (Queen) 122cm x 192cm (4’0” x 6’4”)
With less width than a standard double, this bed is suitable for one person who wants the freedom to stretch out, or as an occasional guest bed. These beds can also suit couples who don’t mind being at close quarters, who want to save money or whose bedroom is small.
Double: 137 x 192cm (4’6” x 6’4”)
The most popular size for most couples’ sleeping arrangements, the double affords just the right amount of space for a pair. As a double is the standard sleeping choice, bed and mattress manufacturers offer large choices in this size. A double is also the selection for individuals who want a comfortable expanse of territory.
King: 152cm x 202cm (5’0” x 6’8”)
A bed for sharing that allows bountiful space to toss and turn without disturbing your partner. Recommended for those who are 190cm or taller, this showpiece bed is suitable for larger bedrooms and perfect for relaxed lounging.
Super King: (182cm x 202cm (6’0” x 6’8”)
The ultimate in space and comfort if you have a room capable of taking this super-sized bed. Taller and larger people are well catered for with this extra spacious model. It is a whole foot wider than king size, enabling you to have a really luxurious sleep.
